About Second Gear

The Second Gear Story

Second Gear is a Mac and iPhone development firm based out of Evansville, IN. Second Gear was founded in 2006 by crew chief and lead developer, Justin Williams. Justin began developing for Mac OS X while still a student at Purdue University contributing and then fully acquiring Check Off. Though Justin is the only full-time employee at this time, he is assisted at times by a capable group of designers and localizers.

At its start in early 2006, Second Gear was focused on developing Web application solutions for a healthy stable of clients using the Ruby on Rails framework. We also introduced our first product, the Web-based bug tracker Porchlight. We also released the most popular Twitter application for the iPhone in 2007, PocketTweets with the help of our friends at The Pixel Implosion.

At the end of 2007, we were feeling a bit worn out on building stuff for others and incredibly burnt out on the Web 2.0 space. Rather than pursue something we weren't that passionate for, we shifted the company's focus to our true passion: the Mac.

The first Second Gear application, Today was released in April of 2008 to much critical and consumer acclaim. Hoping to bulid on that success, we have improved Today and started several other products for both the Mac and iPhone that we can't wait to show our customers in the coming months. We hope you'll come along for the ride.

What We Do

Mac OS X Development

Our primary development platform is Apple's Mac OS X operating system. Starting with our popular to-do list application Check Off, we have strived to build a stable of quality Mac applications that are fun, easy and a privilege to use.

Our Mac applications are 100% native to the platform using Apple's Cocoa framework and levearaging technologies like CoreData, CalendarStore and CoreAnimation.

iPhone Development

The iPhone is the fastest growing mobile phone platform on the market today. It's also our favorite device ever. We built the most popular Web-based Twitter client for the iPhone in 2007, PocketTweets, and are following it up with a few native applications that will complement our existing stable of Mac applications.
